Should it really be on par to helping the homeless, veterans with lost limbs, or children dying of hunger?
Cultural heritage is important. It helps us understand where we have been, where we are going, and who we are. The arts exist in a unique place to critique society, and to challenge ourselves. Though many aren’t aware of the impact that art has on their life, the design and beauty of our world impacts us greatly. Good art captures moments, tells stories, and pushes boundaries.
You’re right that a donation to the arts is not the same as giving a sandwich to the homeless, or funding a service dog for a veteran with PTSD. But the arts are a crucial part of who we are as people. We strive to create and enjoy beautiful things that challenge us to understand our world – or to be better citizens inside it. It allows us to critique the status quo, condemn politicians and policies, and often without using words.
