Overnight a spammer found a vulnrability in our email tool. As a result our ability to send messages was suspended while the issues were addressed. They sent over 6000 emails from a trial account. As of writing over 30% of those emails were to invalid email addresses. While this rate was climbing our email provider (Amazon SES) flagged our account.
We value people at Fresh Vine. The messaging system makes it easy to opt-out of messages. So here is how we’ve fixed this issue.
The Preview Message manual list option was removed. This was a requested feature to make it easy to send messages for approval. It will return, but it will be smarter than before. This tool did not limit or verify the emails that were entered into it. It was a big oversight and will get fixed before it is re-introduced. Trial accounts are also restricted to sending to 10 recipients per message. Yet the preview did not impose that same limit. The account in question was removed before the fix was in place.
The rest of Fresh Vine remained functional. Though parts of Fresh Vine that rely on email may have been buggy or weird. All together the emailing was interupted for around 30 hours.
As the founder of Fresh Vine I hate that this happened. We jumped on it as fast as we could. We’ve been using this service for years without issue. They help us give you amazing delivery rates (many in 40-60% range) in part because they are so proactive. We’re fortunate to have a provider that cares so much.
