We’re excited to announce the release of the new Event Kiosk desktop application. This app will help you take your events to another level of polish and professionalism. It is replacing our existing Check-In application. There have been a lot of improvements, fixes, and additions in this release. Here are four of the big ones. You can read about the rest on the status blog.
As you keep reading you’ll see two themes; we’ve learned a lot from the Check-In, and we’ve made a more premium feeling experience.
Customized Home Screen
If you’re using a kiosk at your event, it makes sense to use it as a point to brand the experience. With the new Event Kiosk you can do just that. Not only can you include a logo that you already set in Fresh Vine, but you can customize the colors of the action bar as well. The action bar is the new horizontal stripe that holds the event name.
You can take it even further by uploading a custom background image. This could be as simple as a photo of the venue you’re meeting in, or a seasonally appropriate graphic (it’s 5 days before Christmas, so a tree with presents, or a manger scene). The action stripe would still be visible so you don’t need to alter the image to hold your event name, but it will look great.
For the most daring amongst us, you can turn the action stripe off and just let your background graphic speak for you. You can match the background graphic with your other marketing materials and welcome people to sign in.
Better Data Management
The new Kiosk uses several improvements made to the Fresh Vine API. A brand new event kiosk resource that builds on what we’ve learned from the Check-In app. We have also gone to great lengths to verify any data that is sent to Fresh Vine from the app.
If we cannot confirm that data sent to Fresh Vine was correctly saved online we will keep it stored as “Unsyned Activity”. This number will show up beneath your data stored totals on the settings window. If you don’t see the red text and number then everything is online.
Finally we are removing data from the app as it removed from Fresh Vine. So if you check in someone by accident, and fix this in Fresh Vine, their attendance is removed in the kiosk. Or if you change relationship, person statuses, and more.
Easier to Setup
There was one major pain when setting up the Check-In, the printers. You hated doing it, and we loathed needing to trouble shoot the number of ways it could go wrong. Now this is simplified. The app gets a list of all your installed printers every time it opens. You select the label printer from a drop down, then the label type from a second drop down. Thats it!
We have templates for the Dymo Shipping Label and the Zebra 4″x2″ labels which we recommend using. If you’re using a different size, you can setup a custom label. Though the label designs are all done in a 4×2 form factor, so if it is too different a shape than that they will print out pretty skewed.
Not a big deal for you as a user of the app, but it was a lot of work, so we included it in the list. It was rewritten for two main reasons. First, the Check-In application is based in Adobe Air. Earlier this year Adobe made their Air product open source – which is the corporate equivalent of getting rid of a product. They basically said, “you can keep using it, but we are no longer putting and time, energy, staff, or money into it.”
The bigger reason for the switch is for easier updates on our end. The new application is primarily written in languages that we use on the web for the rest of Fresh Vine. Over 95% of the new application is languages we use everyday to build and maintain Fresh Vine. You can expect better support, more updates, and a more consistent experience using the Event Kiosk.
